MultiWii ESC Calibration

This video will show you how to use MultiWii program feature """#define ESC_CALIB_CANNOT_FLY """ to calibrate all the ESC at once.

Things to watch out:
  • No need to switch on your TX.
  • Disconnect the board from computer
  • No props attached
  • Once the calibration is completed, comment the #define ESC_CALIB_CANNOT_FLY and re-upload the MultiWii program to the board.
See also how to connect the board to a computer.
and Upload and Configure MultiWii program.

Defect problem --- Hobby King Mini MWC Flight Control Board and DSM2

Incomplete soldering causes the board not able to communicate with ESC's. This causes me to spend so much time on troubleshoot ESC calibrations. I thought that the MultiWii program setup and parameter settings were the issues. It ended up the board defect.

The entire 3rd row of the ESC pins (signal pin) didn't solder to the board. See the arrow shown on the picture below.

Red arrow pointing the row of signal pins have not solder to the board.

MINI MWC Flight Control Board and DSM2 - Connecting to Computer

Some instructions for connecting Mini (MultiWii Control) MWC Flight Control Board to a computer.

The device at the top of picture below is the board . Bought it from HobbyKing. Here is the link.
You might so able to find it here for cheaper price with same quality.

The one at the bottom of the picture is FTDI which is used for connecting the Control Board to computer. As you can see it has an USB on the left.

The FTDI is used for connecting the board to your computer so that you can configure and trim the board controls settings via GUI software, and flash other multicopter firmware into the board via Arduino software.

See how to calibrate the ESCs
and how to upload and configure MultiWii program

Here is a mini micro 4 pin 1.25 T-1 JST connector cable for connecting between the Control Board and the FTDI.

If you look closer in the picture below, you can see pin to pin connections. I have green as ground, yellow as 5V or power (PWR), black as RXD (board side) or TXO (FTDI side), and red as TXD (board side) or RXI (FTDI side).

DIY Clover Leaf Antenna

This post has a few quick snap shots of how I DIY Cloverleaf Antenna. Keep in mind that I am not here to reinvent the cloverleaf which created by IBCrazy. Please go here for the most accurate build instruction. This is just my very own build blog of this antenna.

Cloverleaf Antenna
  1. Cut 3 wires (I use AWG 14 or 2.082 mm^2 electrical wire, but the inventor of the cloverleaf antenna recommends 22 or 23 gauge) to same length that matches your video transmitter frequency. Mine is 5.8 GHz = 2.08” or 53mm.

Here is the overall wire length calculation:
In inches = 12088/frequency in MHz
Or in mm = 307022/frequency in MHz

Scratch Built - Micro Drone V3

Here is the finished Micro Drone V3.

Maiden with 2.5 inches CG from leading edge. Using 2213N 800kv motor and 3S 1000mAa LiPo. The motor does not have enough speed but enough torque. I am considering to change the motor to 1450kv motor to speed the plane up.

    Here are the part list:

    FPV New cl-osd display layout

First, I'd like to give credit to cl-osd for this display creation. The new modified OSD layout shown below is based on my own preferences
This is NTSC, imperial units, voltage 1, 2, and google coordinates always on configuration. This is a HobbyKing G-OSD II. I am using 900MHZ 200mW Tx/Rx & 1/3-inch CCD Camera NTSC.

Here are the eep and hex files that I share with you, and this is the entire File.

    G-OSD flashed - converted to CL-OSD

Here are a few steps with pictures that show how to change the Hobby King G-OSD II firmware to CL-OSD. Here is where I get it. I know there is a blog talks about it, but it has 100+ pages to read. I thought I would just simplify some steps here. At the end you can see a video that shown how the G-OSD react and how the screen looks like during the uploading process.

Here are the other links to the Success and My New Display Design.

Step 1: Go to http://code.google.com/p/cl-osd/source/browse/#svn%2Ftrunk%2FG-OSD and download the cl-osd.hex and cl-osd.eep files. Here is the screen shot of the website.

Step 2: To download the files, click on the View raw file at the lower right hand.

Step 3: You should see the code like below. Then copy the codes and paste them in Notepad and a folder.
